December Camping with Friends, 2021

December Camping

December was a great end to our 2021 camping year.  We camped with  Southeastern Tabs, Tags, and Friends (SETTF) at two great campgrounds, Stephen C. Foster State Park in Fargo, Georgia and Silver Springs State Park in Ocala, Florida.  We were also joined for a couple of days by two of our dance friends who formerly lived near us.  It was so wonderful seeing everyone!

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Stephen C Foster State Park is located within the wildlife refuge.  It is a small, but well- maintained Georgia State Park.  Though we now have a much bigger camper, there was plenty of room on our site.

We were only there for two nights.  Our friends spent their days paddling the rivers, but we didn’t think our shoulder issues would allow it.  However, we were able to experience the water on an interpretive tour led by a park ranger.

Our boat ride was mostly on Billy Lake, near Billy Island, the largest in the area.  It was a beautiful day to be on the water and we saw lots of wildlife, including birds, turtles, and alligators.  One alligator was quite large and we were fairly  close, but when the gator started moving, our ranger moved us away.

There were also several egrets on the water while we were on our ride.

Silver Springs State Park

We were at Silver Springs State Park for four nights and it has become one of our favorites.   The park offers an nice campground, excellent paddling opportunities, and good bike trails.  We were there with SETTF and were joined by our dance friends for two nights.

The Campground

Our site was nice, but pretty much all the sites in the campground were good—large and level.  All had electricity and water, but a few, like ours,  had sewer.  Unfortunately,  the sewer was located at the far back corner of our site and was not useful to us because our hose was not very long.

My husband was delighted to see a big gopher turtle in the road.  He moved it to an open area near our campsite and it disappeared quickly.

December Camping with Friends

We spent a couple of nights at campfires with members of SETTF and accompanied them as they were putting their kayaks in the water at the Silver River.   It looked like so much fun!  We learned that the padding was relatively easy there, so we decided to come back later prepared to try it ourselves.  So, we came back the next day and did the loop.  It was an awesome time!  There was lots of wildlife:  a manatee, and many turtles, alligators,  and birds.  However, we didn’t see any monkeys.

We had a few meals  with our dance friends and took a ride on the glass bottom boat in the park.  It was great to spend time with them.

Views from the Glass Bottom Boat

The glass bottom boat was a very pleasant time on the Silver River.  We learned that a glass bottom boat has been operating there since the 1870s.   The river, which is estimated to have over 600 springs,  has a daily flow of 500 million gallons per day.  It was clear with silver hues.   It was the setting for multiple Tarzan movies and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Through the glass bottom of the boat, we saw an ancient canoe and several of the major springs.

The view of the river from the boat and later in our tandem kayak was amazing.  It is such a beautiful place!

The Silver River

We saw a manatee underwater and many fish and turtles.

There were several ahingas on the river and it was easy to get a photo because they can’t fly well until their feathers dry.  I have never seen them before this trip.

Rawlings Historic State Park

A SETTF friend suggested a stop on our way home at Marjorie Rawlings Historic State Park .  Though the house wasn’t open, we are very glad we made the stop.  Rawlings is the Pulitzer award-winning writer of the “Yearling” and “Cross Creek”.

Rawlings’ Cracker House

Her home and the land is much like it was when she lived there. The photo below was taken from outside.  She sat on the porch at that typewriter when she wrote her famous novels.

A really nice park ranger told us a lot about the place and Rawlings’ life.  He also gave us some grapefruits from the citrus trees.

December Camping Conclusion

We loved this last trip of the year.  The parks were extraordinary and spending time with our friends was wonderful.  More of our adventures can be accessed on our webpage, Retirement and camping!

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Edisto Beach with SE T@Bs, T@Gs, and Friends

Edisto Beach

Edisto Beach is a small island town on the South Carolina coast. There was a large gathering of members of Southeastern T@Bs, T@Gs, and Friends (SETTF) at Edisto Beach State Park and we were happy to be among them.   The group met there last year as well,  but we missed that one.  We were blessed with great weather and a wonderful group of people to enjoy the time there.

Camping with Sophie

Sophie is our five-month old goldendoodle and she is a big part of our camping these days.  This was her third camping trip and she is getting pretty comfortable with the whole thing.  She is a great little traveler in the car, which is very fortunate because Edisto is 443 miles from our home.

Sophie is ready to go camping

A Stopover in Georgia

Firstly, we stopped halfway on our journey at A.H. Stephen’s State Park in Georgia to break up the trip.  It is right off the Interstate and has nice shaded lots.  I took a long walk around the campground and, unfortunately, injured my knee.  It remained slightly swollen and sore for the rest of the trip.

Edisto Beach Campground

Above all,  the Edisto trip was about being with all our friends who were camping with us.   There were more than a dozen T@Bs and T@Gs at the campground.  It was great to see all the like-minded campers.    We had a big campsite across from the bathhouse and the only negative was a very weak cell signal.

This trip, we spent more time at the campground than usual.  It is harder to get away for an extended time with the puppy and my knee was also limiting activity a bit.

Botany Bay

Botany Bay is just a few miles down the road from the campground.  It is a wildlife preserve located on the site of two old plantations.

Path to the Boneyard Beach

The beach at Botany Bay is a boneyard beach, much like the one on Hunting Island.  It is an area where the sea has reclaimed a portion of the forest.

With some of our friends

Sadly, we did not get to fully explore the preserve.  Dogs are not allowed, so our time was limited.  There is a driving tour and some historic buildings .  We plan to be there again next year, so I want to explore it more fully.

Edisto Beach

The campground has a lovely stretch of beach and we visited it a couple of times.  It was April and the water was cold.  However, it was nice to feel the sea air and walk along the beach.

The beach is dog-friendly, so our pup was able to experience it too.

Sophie seemed unsure about the incoming waves, but must have liked the overall time there because she didn’t want to get in the car when it was time to go.

Hanging with the Group

The wonderful group of SETTF campers was the best part of this trip.  We have camped with several of them many times and consider them good friends.   Also, we always meet new people who are fun to get to know.

Campfire gathering

Mexican Train was fun with Lois, Gary, Joyce, and David.  We played it at one of our earlier gatherings and it is becoming a bit of a tradition.

A Rousing Game of Mexican Train

Nightly gatherings around an expertly-built fire are also a tradition.  In this Covid-19 era, potlucks have gone away, but everyone brings their drink of choice.  So, it is a no-pressure, relaxing experience.  With the isolation that Covid has brought, it has been so great to have this relatively safe social interaction.

Jeff, our Fire Master

This was a great trip and we were happy to see all our fellow NüCamp owners.  There are other group gatherings coming up that we will have to miss, but we will camp with the group again in September.

Edisto has two campgrounds, and we were in the Live Oak Campground this trip.   We have also stayed in the beach campground on our T@B 400’s  maiden voyage,  South Carolina Camping, First T@B 400 Trip.

Happy camping!

Long Summer Trip 2019, with Friends Old and New

Long Summer Trip

We like to head north for a long summer trip each year.  Summers in Alabama are sweltering and it is good to get away for awhile.  For two years in a row, the highlight of our trip has been the nüCamp rally in Sugarcreek, Ohio.  As we head there and back, we visit states where we have not previously camped.  This year, we were fortunate to also be able to connect with Southeastern T@Bs, T@Gs and Friends and to reconnect with friends along the way.

Over the course of five weeks, we pulled our camper almost 3,000 miles and camped in seven states, five of which were new states for us and camping.

Southeastern T@Bs, T@Gs and Friends

This Facebook group, managed by Jeff Lackey,  is quite active and we joined them at Vogel State Park in Blairsville, Georgia.  It was the first stop on our trip.  Also, our friends from Florida, Peggy and Chandler, met us there.  We were so happy to be able to spend time with them.    They are the best camping buddies ever!

It was great getting to know other nüCamp owners who are also relatively close to home. We hope to camp with members of the group often.   We spent time with three couples from the group;  Diana and Jeff, Victoria and Fred, and Lois and Gary.  We also spent time with two single campers, Allison and Karen.  All were very nice.  There was a potluck one night and the food and company was amazing.   We hiked with Jeff, Diana, and Karen, plus her dog, Cashew.  We had not for planned a long hike, but Jeff and Diana offered water and snacks, plus loaned us hiking poles and a hat.  They are both so nice!

nüCamp Rally, Focus of Long Summer Trip

The üCamp 19 event was awesome, despite some challenges with the weather.  It is clear that nüCamp still engenders tremendous loyalty from its customers because of the service it provides and how its people treat the customers.  One person this year, Robert Yoder, went out of his way to take care of a minor problem that was our creation.

Winklepeck was lovely and we had a spot with some shade that did not flood too badly.

We did the factory tour and saw the new, larger camper, the Avia.    It was really nice, but we still are happy with our 400.

It was great to see Kevin, Gloria, and Sheryl, our neighbors from the 2018 rally.   Two couples and one single lady we met at Vogel were also there.  We had great neighbors again this year, especially Rosa, who was so generous with her homemade pumpkin cookies.

Five New States

Five new states will be added to our map from this trip:  Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and North Carolina.  We had some great times!  Below is a post for each state.

Reconnecting With Friends

We met Mark and Heidi at a Tiny Christmas Campout in 2017 and have really enjoyed their company.  They offered to let us camp on their property if we were ever in the area.  It so happened that we wanted to visit Shenandoah National Park and they live just a few miles away, so we took them up on their offer.

Heidi and Mark live on a beautiful piece of property and we loved spending a few days taking in the views.

Heidi and Mark live closely to nature with a minimalist attitude.  It is inspiring to be around them.  They were wonderful hosts!  Mark prepared a meal for us and they gave us honey and blackberry preserves they cultivated and prepared.  We also played Mexican Train Dominos.  We hauled the game around for five weeks and were glad for an opportunity to play.

One passion both Heidi and Mark share is their dog, Tru.  He has a great life with them as his parents.

Heidi is an amazing woman.  She completely built the house that is behind them.  All the labor!  I am blown away by her skills and because there doesn’t seem to be anything she won’t tackle.

Long Summer Trip and New Friends

Lastly, we met a lovely couple, Casey and Walt, at our campsite in Mount Pisgah.  They are both charming and we really enjoyed their company.  They are from Maryland and we were visiting there later in our trip.  So, while camping near them, we met for dinner.

It is so nice when you meet people along the way that you really enjoy and have a rapport.  Not everyone you meet falls into that category, which makes those who do so special.

We can go to new places and enjoy them without knowing anyone in the area and without really connecting in a significant way, but it is really good to enjoy travels with people who are special to you.

Safe Travels Everyone!
